Malcolm X

With the advent of the Swing revivial in the 1980s, the dance made it back into several movies, and the movie Malcolm X (1992), directed by Spike Lee, was one of them. Frankie Manning was the dance consultant who provided the authentic steps, movement, and the authentic look of the dance.  With MTV choreographer, Otis Sallid, staging it, however, it made it seem as though aerials were done on the social dance floor, though in reality, they were often only done in jam circles or performances.  The song in the sequence is “Flying Home”, and the man on the vibes is presumably Lionel Hampton, who recorded it with the Benny Goodman Sextet.
